In the Jewish religion there are many beautiful and meaningful traditions that help families be able to cope with the death of a loved one. When a loved one dies the families clergy or a local funeral director who is Jewish is contacted. The clergy or funeral director will then visit the family to discuss the funeral and to fulfill the family’s needs and wishes. Traditonally the funeral is held in the synagogue, a chapel or at the grave site. The funeral is usually held as soon as possible. At the end of the funeral service the Kaddish is recited by the deceased’s family. Any other mourners at the funeral are suppose to recite the Kaddish for the next thirty days. If a parent dies the children will recite the Kaddish at every religious service they attend for the next eleven months. There are also several other traditions that are followed by the Jewish tradition. These include refrigerating the body instead of embalming it. There is also Tahara which is a ritual that involves washing the body of the deceased by a person of the dame gender. The body is the dressed in a Tachrichim which is an all white shroud that is hand sewn andis preferably made of linen. They are then placed in an Aron which is a totally wooden casket that is made without the use of metal and is free of ornamentation. The Mogen David which is the Hebrew Star of David is placed on top of the casket. A Shomer will sit with the deceased body until the day of the burial. On the day of the burial which is also called Kevurah the Shivah begins. The Shivah is the seven days of mourning. On the last day of the Shivah an hour of mourning signals the end of the Shivah. Visitors come to see the family during the Shivah every day except during the Sabbath. After the burial of the deceased the grave will not be visited for the next thirty days and this time is called the Shloshim. After the Shloshim is over the grave marker will be dedicated. |
